Workshop: How do researchers decide on what research to carry out? Definition, concepts and use of systematic reviews for Research Priority Setting

Dr Mona Nasser

Co-Convenor, Cochrane Agenda and Priority Setting Methods Group

Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth (UK)

Some researchers make decisions on which research to carry out on the basis of their personal interests, curiosity about the topic, whilst others might be attracted by job opportunities, and some just follow what their bosses tell them to do it. Recently, more and more scientists are recognising the importance of identifying and understanding the needs of policy-makers, clinicians and patients on what questions can enhance public health or patient care. The workshop will explore these issues and in particular it will focus on the methods used for research priority setting.
